This Week in Tetris: October 29-November 11

While early November was dominated by DAS events (which, for now, remain outside the scope of This Week in Tetris), there were still some juicy open-playstyle matchups for rolling fans. Blue Scuti continued his dominant streak by notching his second consecutive Masters title, Meme continued her meteoric rise, and big sets by SV and TetrisTime added to the conversation.

We're always looking for new contributors, so if you're interested, join our Discord server and say hello. Huge thank you to sonic, who wrote two of the features and provided the Challengers scores for the month. The server also features the Almost-Daily Update, which provides the scores of yesterday's big matches and lets you know what's going on in the future.

The numbers next to the players are their November Premiere Poll rankings, not their tournament seeds. Scores in the tables are given in thousands; an (i) or (a) next to a score indicates that the topout was intentional or aggressive, respectively. As always, let me know if you found this entertaining or useful, or if there's anything else you'd like to see.

What can you do against Scuti right now? Myles played a world-class set, but he was left in the dust by Blue Scuti, who looks every bit as dominant as Fractal and Alex T did earlier this year.

Scuti parlayed an efficient 18 into a six-figure lead into game 1's killscreen phase. After quickly getting a handle on his board on 29, Myles was tetrising away and not allowing Scuti to grow the lead, but a hole in his stack led to a dig that ate up any chance for him to catch up. Scuti mullened to just shy of a 1.6. Scuti had another significant lead going into post-post in game 2 off of a late-post dig from Myles. Although Myles was able to extend the game with a beautiful dig on level 31, Scuti pressed his advantage, while trollish RNG failed to provide any sort of opening for his opponent. Game 3 saw rough RNG and tempered scores from both players pre-transition, but Scuti was able to clean up and turn on the gears in post. After falling behind pre-29 by over a hundred thousand on the third consecutive game, Myles had to play aggressively, ultimately unable to wrangle his board three levels into the killscreen.

Scuti is rapidly running out of room in his trophy cabinet, with two CTM titles, two CTL titles, and in-person victories in Stillwater and Lone Star all coming just in the past few months; three of those accolades came via wins over Myles in the finals, who has finished in second place in six major tournaments this year. -arbaro

Months of controller issues have caused SV to significantly underperform ever since he won CTUK in August. Following a first-round Masters' exit last month, a low qualifying score placed him into Challengers in October, and he barely squeaked past his round 1 opponent, CryticaLapis, in a decider. Once his controller was fixed, however, we started seeing shadows of his old self. He swept Redshurt and put up a rollover in round 2, then got a 1.4 against Poke in the semis; but to win Challengers, he had to first get past Armstrong.

Both players played well on level 18 across the four games in the match. The difference maker was, in the case of game 1 and 2, navigating their way out of digs on 19, which killed Armstrong in game 1 and SV in game 2. In the latter two games we were able to see the power of killscreen play- SV won game 3 and 4 despite being a tetris or two behind going into 29, as Armstrong topped out soon after in both cases.

SV would go on to play very well in the next couple of weeks, upsetting Myles in CTL and winning all his CTL matches so far. In any case, I'm glad that his controller woes seem to be behind him; his unique stacking style makes him a very captivating player to watch, and I look forward to seeing more from him. -sonic

Player Spotlight: TETRISTIME

First it was a PB, narrowly missing a rollover, in No Cap November quals; then he got another 1.5 unrecorded; then he proceeded to smash his PB in dramatic fashion as a mullen in CTL. There's no doubt that TetrisTime is breaking his way into the Top 25 again, and although he got swept by Dog in CTL, that match was much closer than the final scoreline indicated. -sonic
